Walking Trip in Sardinia

22-26 September 2010

Tortoli', Ogliastra, Sardinia

(in partnership with The Challenge Hikers)

This hiking trip is located on the wonderful east side of Sardinia in the Supramonte mountains. The landscape where this walking tour takes place, belongs to one of the most dramatic coastlines of the Mediterranean. White cliffs rising 800m high out of the blue, crystal clear waters of Ogliastra and the Golfo di Orosei. The thousands of mysterious Nuraghe villages and towers, scattered over this island, tell us of ancien...t times and ancient cultures that once ruled Sardinia. Sardinia Island is one of the best places in the world if we consider the hiking opportunity. The most characteristic image of Sardinia is perhaps the endless space and majestic landscapes. Due to its insular position and historical events, Sardinia is one of the Mediterranean areas where popular traditions are less contaminated by the outside world. One has the feeling of entering in another world.

Hikes are possible in the heart of the Supramonte, a rugged and rough mountain area, where still many secrets are concealed. Narrow footpaths lead you to the Su Gologone, a well that constantly pours out great amounts of crystal clear water. You will walk through the narrow and spectacular gorge called Gola di Gorropu, high up to Monte Tiscali, where you will find the ancient hidden city of the Nuraghe people. The final stretch is down to the sea where a pleasant and relaxing stay awaits you at Arbatax and the beautiful beach of Goloritzè.

Where

Tortolì, Ogliastra, Sardinia

Accommodation

Since all the interesting mountaineous regions are on the east coast - which is where the largest beaches are - you can also book hotel rooms, guest house, and appartments from any tourist office. The region around the town Tortolì is the best staying place.

How to get there

Closest airports are Alghero (direct flight from Dublin), Cagliari, and Olbia. There is also a small airport in Tortolì linked to Rome but is quite expansive… If you have a lot of time there is also an harbour in Tortolì (Arbatax) linked to Genoa and Rome/Civitavecchia.

Finally, please note that this is not an organised trip, and as such, you won't be covered by insurance - we are simply an informal, like-minded group that meet regularly to enjoy a walk, and if you choose to accompany us, you must take responsibility for your own safety.

A condition of attending is that you leave no trace.
